Essential Travel Tips for a Smooth and Enjoyable Trip

From travel experts to beginners, we all make mistakes before or during our holiday from time to time. We forgot to check visa rules or an expired passport can ruin our holiday and be costly. Let's see my top  tips to save money and time

1. Passport and Documentation

Always check your passport's expiry date well before your trip to avoid any last-minute complications. If you plan to rent a car, make sure to bring your international driving license. There's nothing more annoying than realizing at the airport that you can't go anywhere because of these issues.

Visa requirements and entry/exit procedures vary from country to country, so it's important to always inquire about them. If you are not sure ask for help at the airport help desk or your travel consultant.

2. Research and Planning

Thoroughly research your destination's weather conditions, peak seasons, and local customs to plan your trip. Compare prices for flights, accommodation, and activities to find the best deals and ensure you stay within your budget. Do your own research or ask your travel consultant; you can find thousands of different deals online.

3. Luggage

Check your airline's baggage policy to understand weight restrictions and avoid unexpected fees. Take a photo of your luggage before checking it in, in case it gets lost or misplaced. Tag your luggage with your name, contact information, and destination to facilitate identification. Pack only essential items and consider versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched to save space. Also, consider whether you need all the clothes, books, hairdryer, toiletries, and electronics for your one-week holiday. Most of the time, people regret packing too many items in their luggage.

4. Airport Procedures

Arrive at the airport well in advance of your flight to allow enough time for check-in, security, and navigating the terminal. Most of the big terminals around the world have nice restaurants and shops to spend time/money. Carry an empty water bottle through security and refill it at a fountain to stay hydrated and save money. Avoid exchanging money at the airport, as rates are often less favorable than those at banks or exchange bureaus in the city. Optional: there are many beautiful lounges if you have to wait a lot.

5. Health and Safety

Have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen circumstances. Many credit cards offer insurance coverage, but it may not completely cover your activities. Consult your doctor before travel to discuss any necessary vaccinations or health precautions specific to your destination. Before you travel, try to purchase any medicines that you think might be needed, as you cannot be sure of their availability especially if you have a sensitive tummy. Check water(drinkable), fruits, and vegetable quality to avoid any contaminated food or drink.

6. Technology and Entertainment

Ensure your electronic devices are fully charged before your flight, and consider bringing a portable charger for backup power. Pack a universal power adapter to ensure compatibility with different electrical outlets at your destination. Download movies, music, or e-books to keep yourself entertained during long flights or in areas with limited internet access. After landing or arriving, it is advisable to purchase a local SIM card to use data.

7. Etiquette

Be mindful of cultural differences and customs to avoid offending anyone and ensure a positive experience for both yourself and the people you meet. Try to be a traveller, not just a tourist. I often see people from wealthy countries looking down on or laughing at locals when traveling. I don't understand why, some people have a fancy degree, but no manners or class.

8. Safety

Inform your bank and family members about your travel plans to avoid any issues with your accounts or unnecessary worry. If it's not necessary don't take your family fortune with you (bracelet, expensive watch, bag). Good to know where is the nearest embassy, hospital, or doctor if you have an emergency.

9. Stay Hydrated, Nourished, and Well-Rested:
  • Hydration: Maintain proper hydration throughout your travels by drinking plenty of water, especially during long flights or in hot climates. Carry a refillable water bottle and refill it regularly.

  • Nourishment: Eat balanced meals and healthy snacks before and during your travels to avoid relying on unhealthy or expensive options. Embrace local cuisine but prioritize food safety.

  • Rest: Make sure to prioritize sleep to keep your energy levels up and stay healthy during your trip. Don't forget to pack earplugs and an eye mask to help improve the quality of your sleep in new environments.
